I. Qing Dynasty Ceramics: The Golden Age of Chinese Ceramic Art

The essence of human ceramics during the reigns of Emperors Yongzheng and Qianlong represents one of the pinnacles of Chinese ceramic art. Under the reigns of Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795), ceramic crafting techniques reached perfection with a combination of exquisite craftsmanship and artistic creativity. II. The Chrysanthemum Dragon Vase of Qianlong – A Timeless Masterpiece

The Chrysanthemum Dragon Vase of Qianlong, once owned by Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796), stands 57cm tall and 38cm wide.

The vase is crafted from high-quality ceramics, with an elegant shape featuring a slightly flared short neck and a soft round body. The glossy blue glaze covers the entire surface of the vase, resembling the clear autumn water, reflecting sparkling light, creating a luxurious and noble beauty, often displayed for the emperor’s enjoyment in the court.

The motifs on the Chrysanthemum Dragon Vase of Qianlong bear the distinct mark of Eastern culture. On the blue glaze background, the images of dragons and chrysanthemum vines appear vivid, as if moving and dancing on the vase’s surface.

  • Dragon: The supreme mythical creature in Chinese culture, symbolizing power, strength, and prosperity. The dragon on the Chrysanthemum Dragon Vase of Qianlong not only represents the emperor’s authority but also symbolizes luck and good fortune. Each curving line of the dragon exudes majesty and vigor, with movements rising from the vase’s surface.
  • Chrysanthemum Vine: A noble flower representing longevity, nobility, and happiness. The combination of the dragon and chrysanthemum vine on the vase signifies a prosperous, enduring dynasty and a peaceful, fulfilling life. Chrysanthemums, along with plum blossoms, orchids, and bamboo, are considered the four noble plants in Chinese culture, symbolizing gentlemanliness, purity, and resilience. The delicate, soft chrysanthemum petals intertwine with the powerful dragon image, creating a unique harmony, reflecting the balance between yin and yang, strength and delicacy.
  • Imperial Seal (at the bottom of the vase): “Great Qing Qianlong Period” proves that the vase was crafted and once owned by Emperor Qianlong.

A similar ceramic vase once owned by Emperor Yongzheng, China, was sold for over 78 million HKD (equivalent to 10 million USD) at an auction organized by Christie’s in Hong Kong.
